Fort Lee, Virginia Real Estate: Fort Lee is fortunate to be part of the outstanding community of Prince George County. Support to the district not only comes from parents but also from the business community, military installation at Ft. Lee, elected officials, and the community at large. The community takes a great deal of pride in its schools and the quality of graduates they produce. The influx to Ft. Lee as a result of the work of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) is going to help the school district grow. A new elementary school went out to bid in September 2007, with expected occupancy in September 2009.
This military post dates back to 1917, when it was referred to as “Camp Lee.” After World War I, Camp Lee was taken over by the Commonwealth of Virginia and designated a game preserve. In October 1940, with World War II on the rise, the War Department ordered for the construction of another Camp Lee on the site of the earlier installation. The Quartermaster Replacement Training Center was destined to be the largest QMRTC in the country and started operation in February 1941. By the end of 1941, Camp Lee was the center of both basic and advanced training of Quartermaster personnel.
The post was renamed as “Fort Lee” in April 1950. In 1954, the Army Supply Management Course (later expanded and re-designated as Army Logistics Management Center) was opened as a training program under the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Department of the Army. The semi-automated ground environment (SAGE) project of the Air Force (now designated 20th Air Division) was established at Fort Lee in July 1956. This was followed in April of the following year by a field installation of the Army Communications Agency.
Construction of modern facilities began in 1950. A 20 year program was developed with the objective of converting Fort Lee to a modern army post with permanent brick or cinder block structures. Many new buildings have been constructed since that time, including permanent quarters, academic buildings and post service and recreational facilities.
Fort Lee became a Class I military installation under the Second US Army. In July 1973, Fort Lee came under the control of the Training and Doctrine Command. Also, during this major Army reorganization, the Combat Developments Command Personnel and Logistics Systems Group provided the nucleus for the establishment of the US Army Logistics Center at Fort Lee.
